Geography of Comoros
The Comoros Islands are a cluster of 4 Volcanic Islands situated in the Mozambique Channel of the Western Indian Ocean; halfway between the northern extremity of Madagascar and the East coast of the African continent. Three islands namely Anjouan (Ndzuwani); Grande Comore (Ngazidja) and Mohéli (Mwali); have built the sovereign Union of Comoros since 1975; while Mayotte (Maoré), the fourth island is under the French administration. Notably, the 4 islands were the result of a strong volcanic (tectonic) movement that started almost eight million years ago. The Comoros islands have low hills and steep mountains, making the place scenic.

The current population of Comoros is 870,920 and the life expectancy for both sexes is 65.03 years at birth. Official languages are French, Comorian, and Arabic. The Comorians living in Anjouan, Mohéli, and Grande Comore share Arab-African origins.
The political system in Comoros
The government system is democratic here and the President is the head of the state and government. The country has a mixed economic arrangement with substantial dependence on agriculture; the centralized economic and government system is somewhat weak here. Comoros also shares membership with the Arab League and COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa).
Culture in Comoros
Islamic culture is followed in dominance and several Quranic schools reinforce the Islamic culture among children here. Apart from Islamic, a small group of Comorians is Christian and Roman Catholic. Though natives are usually tolerant of other cultures; customs must be respected here. Numerous people believe in mortal spirits and the power of “djinn”, basically drawn from Arab, Madagascan, and African traditions. Alcohol is not prohibited, people must use their own discretion while drinking in public. Women belong to houses, alleys, and indoor courtyards; while men’s hub is public places and mosques. Ritual dishes are castrated goat, beef, cakes, and curdled milk. The country primarily trades in cloves, Vanilla, Ylang-Ylang, and copra, due to which, Comoros is also called ‘Perfume Islands’. Germany, United States, and France are the major trading partners of Comoros.

Mohéli
It is the smallest yet the most captivating place mainly because it’s the hub for enjoying marine beings like whales, sea turtles, and dolphins. Even though the place is a little backward, it’s the ultimate place if you want to just holiday. The country’s sole National park named Parc Marin de Mohéli can be found here.
Anjouan
Anjouan is popularly called ‘The Pearl of the Comoros’ because of the Robinson Crusoe characteristics it possesses. Someone looking for a gorgeous, uncontaminated, and remote spot for relaxing purposes; this is the place. The age-old Arab plantations and fragrance of Ylang-Ylang and cloves can be smelt in every breeze here.
Grande Comore
20Km wide and 60km across, this is the biggest and the most advanced of the Comoros Islands with a stable economy. Grande Comore is just perfect for newly-wed couples or someone that wants to escape the noise of city life. Though the majority of the population lives at the west shore; the Southern region offers beautiful agricultural scenery filled with banana, cassava, coconut, and vanilla plantations.
The best time to visit Comoros is in between April to November as this is the driest time.
